Steve Hamilton

Managing Director

Steve Hamilton is the Managing Director of HML Engineering. Steve has a simple philosophy and that is do what you say you will do with integrity and honesty. Steve calls a spade as a spade and his word is his bond.

Reece Hamilton

Sales Director

Reece uses his years of hands on experience in both fabrication and install to get the best outcome and value to meet client needs. Reece is passionate about steel structures and likes listening to the clients needs and solving these with a fit for purpose design.

Duncan Hamilton

Design Director

Duncan uses his industry knowledge along with his experience in steel detailing to deliver an efficient design along with visual concepts to help clients see impressions of their projects.

Fergus Faulkner

Project Manager

Detailed and thorough, Fergus operates with good, clear communication. His many years of experience in the industry are brought to every project.

Alistair Savage

Operations and Safety

Alistair is involved across the teams; marketing, operations, team member support and leadership, contracts, and a focus on safety and compliance.

Jarrod Ferguson

Quantity Surveyor

Jarrod is great with the details and uses his knowledge as a qualified builder and quantity surveyor to ensure our estimating is spot on, and stays on track when the project is up and running.

Our Commitment

Health & Safety

Safety is always a focus for the team, from the top down. Care of our people, and those we come into contact with, is important to us.

We make significant annual investments in the training budget and team time to manage our risks and monitor and maintain the health of our team. We’re systemised in our approach but with plenty of people input from those that ‘do it’.

We’re focused on our safety standards and are pleased to have repeatedly achieved 100% in Site Wise process assessments.

HML's 40 year History

Milestones on Our Path to Success

We’ve had a journey filled with achievements and learning. Here’s a look back at some of our key milestones that shaped our path. From challenges to triumphs, each moment has helped us grow and innovate. Join us as we explore these significant dates.

1983

HML Engineering’s founder Steve Hamilton starts SM Hamilton as an earth moving contractor 2 years after leaving school.

1992

Steve takes over the mechanical and engineering side of M.R. Hamilton Earth Moving

1999

Steve bought out Fairweather Engineering, a Blenheim based engineering business founded in 1879. This required increase in staff numbers and a shift in to the general engineering and structural steel fields. Taking over Fairweather’s larger workshop next door at 11-13 Opawa Street.

1999-2006

The team continued to expand and eventually outgrew the in town location.

2006

Hamilton’s Machinery Limited is incorporated and expands to the current site at 432 Rapaura Road, Blenheim. 2,250m2 of workshop plus 12,000m2 of yard space allows for the expansion the business is going through.

2010

Hamilton’s Machinery Limited starts trading as HML Engineering while working in Christchurch to help rebuild following the Canterbury earthquakes.

2014 - 2015

There was significant expansion in to the lower North Island with numerous seismic and new builds undertaken.

2016

HML Engineering start onsite at Grey Base Hospital in Greymouth. A project of 910 tonnes of structural steel.

2020

We engage in another hospital project, this time in Wellington (750 tonnes) and find that our effcient control of logistics, reputation for quality and experince in managing remote work has us completing a significant portion of our work successfully in the lower North Island.

2022

The positive team culture, high team retention rate and active recruiting place us well in a market where labour is constrained. A blast and paint area was also commissioned during the year, as well as updates to the Logistics fleet.

2023

Two new apprentices start, and we commence on several large scale projects in the Marlborough region with the Workshop team working at near full capacity. The decision to establish the paint facility provides benefits in quality and timeliness, plus contributing to a significant saving in emissions from reduced freight movements.

2025

Further expansion both North and South are the highlights of 2025. Our expertise in structural design and build is being recognised and we're able to partner to deliver quality structures at exceptional value. Our fixed price offer proving very welcome in the market.
